Facilities and location

The INL campus is a 47,000 m2 land parcel in one of the best areas of Braga, close to the Gualtar campus of Minho University, extending along one of the main city avenues up to the East River, and next to municipal leisure sport grounds and a residential neighborhood.

The Laboratory is planned for 200 scientists, about 100 PhD students, and supporting technical and administrative staff, and to be operational by 2010. It will have a built area of about 20,000 m2, comprising advanced special installations and several laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment, among which a class 100 Central Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room of circa 700 m2.

The Basis of Design of the campus was presented publicly in a 18th of January 2008 inauguration ceremony jointly presided by the Prime Minister of Portugal and the President of the Government of Spain, and will comprise a main scientific building, an incubator, a social support building and later a Ciência Viva centre for the promotion of the public awareness of nano science and technology.

Braga is, in population, the third largest Portuguese town. It is located 39 Km North of Porto, the 2nd Portuguese town which gave the name to Port Wine, 25 Km West of the castle town of Guimarães which is considered to be the berth town of Portugal in the 12th century, and 78 Km South of the Spanish town of Vigo, which is on the way to the famous Catholic pilgrimage Galician town Santiago de Compostela. Both Porto and Vigo have international airports.
